“If I Were Your Teacher, I Would…”: Regional Symposia 2012
In the Umoja Community, the response to the call to serve is grounded in an audacious love ethic that deliberately engages students as full participants in the construction of knowledge and critical thought. In a speech to students at Castlemont High School in Oakland, James Baldwin raises the question of the deeper purpose of education for America’s African American children. His refrain in his speech is a call to the Umoja Community, “If I were your teacher, I would….” At this year’s Northern and Southern California Regional Symposia, we come together in community to hone our response, to sharpen our strategies, and further ground our collective effort in order to answer Baldwin’s call.
