The support services component within Umoja porgrams should provide academic and emotional support to student participants. Support services are necessary and critical to maintaining the flow of academic learning, personal growth and self-efficacy among student learners. Support services exist not only to enrich the lives of individual students, but also to increase and enhance the overall success of the Umoja program.
Goals and Objectives of Support Services Component:
- To provide emotional and academic support services to program participants which increase the opportunities for successful completion of college goals (counseling, tutoring, etc.)
- To assess the academic progress of program participants and provide or recommend appropriate interventions.
- To increase student knowledge of financial aid programs as well as campus and community resources.
- To provide the opportunity to attend African centered cultural activities that serve to increase cultural awareness and foster a positive self-esteem.
- To match students with a mentor from the campus or the community at large.
- To foster student leadership through the establishment of an Umoja student club or through participation in existing student organizations.
