The Umoja Student Leadership Summit (SLS) is a space to convene, train, and organize Umoja students to go forward and assume their roles as leaders in their local programs and communities. Empowered by Lorraine Hansberry quote, “The most common way people give up their power, is by thinking they don't have any." This year's SLS will make our ancestor's words tangible, centered around student leadership through an African-centered lens. Students will learn about African-centered student leadership, discuss strategies for advocacy, address outreach/in-reach efforts from a peer perspective, and engage in conversation on how to support students in the new normal of higher education. The SLS empowers student leaders to further develop personally and academically.

The event features student-centered presentations and engages students in skill development, resulting in campus and community impact. Umoja scholars will hear from remarkable speakers, engage in multiple INDABAS (deep conversations), and learn how to be change agents on their campuses. Student leaders who attend the SLS should be current students who serve in leadership on your campus in some capacity and are willing to challenge themselves in an academic environment to promote advanced skillsets in leadership and beyond. As the Umoja practitioner, you will be involved in discussions, guide your students, and engage throughout the entire experience. Practitioners are required to lodge on campus to chaperone their scholars, lodging is provided to all students and practitioners in the residence halls.
